Paraneoplastic thrombocytosis: the secrets of tumor self-promotion.

چکیده
Paraneoplastic thrombocytosis is associated with many solid tumors and often correlates with reduced survival. Recent studies suggest that a pathogenic feed back loop may be operative between platelets and tumor cells, with reciprocal interactions between tumor growth/metastasis and thrombocytosis/platelet activation. Specific molecular pathways have been identified in which tumors can stimulate platelet production and activation; activated platelets can, in turn, promote tumor growth and metastasis. Taken together, these findings provide exciting new potential targets for therapeutic intervention.

Blood Spotlight Paraneoplastic thrombocytosis: the secrets of tumor self-promotion
Normally quiescent platelets in the circulation respond to localized breaches in vascular integrity by providing hemostasis with swiftness and precision. They do so by mobilizing their remarkable repertoire of capabilities to respond to injury: adhesion, activation, secretion, aggregation, recruitment, and wound healing. However, only in recent years have we begun to appreciate the functional v...
متن کاملParaneoplastic thrombocytosis in ovarian cancer.
BACKGROUND The mechanisms of paraneoplastic thrombocytosis in ovarian cancer and the role that platelets play in abetting cancer growth are unclear. METHODS We analyzed clinical data on 619 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer to test associations between platelet counts and disease outcome. Human samples and mouse models of epithelial ovarian cancer were used to explore the underlying mec...

Approximately 95% of ovarian cancers are of epithelial origin. In 2013, there were 22,240 estimated new diagnoses of ovarian cancer and 14,030 deaths from the disease (Siegel et al, 2013). The high mortality of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is mainly due to latestage diagnosis for more than 70% of patients. Recently, paraneoplastic syndromes have been proved in playing a causal role in poor p...
متن کاملPrimary Small Cell Carcinoma of the Esophagus (PSCEC) Associated with Paraneoplastic Sweating Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review
Introduction: Primary small cell carcinoma of theesophagus (PSCEC) associated with paraneoplastic sweating syndrome is a rare disease characterized with rapid growth rate, metastasis at the time of diagnosis, and poor prognosis. The lung is the most common site for small cell carcinoma but this malignancy includes 0.1% to 1% of all gastrointestinal and 0.8% to 2.7% of esophageal malignancies. ...
